‘AT WORK’ WITH BERGEN KJØTT
Bergen Kjøtt presents a new podcast followed by an hour of improvised music, recorded live in the studios at Bergen Kjøtt. Bergen Kjøtt is a production house, creative workplace and cultural venue in a 1930’s margarine-turned-meat factory in Bergen, Norway.
1. “At work” – an interview with Eva Rowson, Managing Director, Bergen Kjøtt (Bergen, Norway) and Yvonne Carmichael, Director, South Square Centre (Thornton, Bradford, UK)Recorded and produced by Isak Wingsternes, Bergen Kjøtt, March 2021.
“At work” is a new podcast series hosted by Bergen Kjøtt.
Each podcast will connect with different cultural organisations who, like Bergen Kjøtt, have a heritage embedded in industry and production, as former factories, workers’ housing and manufacturing sites. These conversations will focus how these multi-disciplinary organisations are now thinking through their heritage, community and location – and how they approach both history and future in their buildings, programmes and organisational structures.Yvonne Carmichael is Director of South Square Centre in Thornton, Bradford, UK. South Square is based within a Grade II listed building originally built as a courtyard of workers’ cottages in 1832 in Thornton village. Since opening as an arts and community centre in 1982, South Square has developed as a thriving visual arts venue. South Square is run as a sustainable enterprise of workshop rooms, artists’ studios, local history archive, vegetarian cafe, and at its heart, an artistic programme of exhibitions, workshops and events.
2. Bergen Kjøtt Studio Session : live music from the Bergen Kjøtt studios. Recorded at Bergen Kjøtt, 31 March 2020

Bergen Kjøtt houses a creative community of over 100 musicians, producers and visual artists. The Bergen Kjøtt Studio Sessions began in 2020 as a way to keep producing and promoting live music in a year of cancelled live events. The Studio Sessions unite – at a safe distance – different configurations of studio holders in a series of broadcast live musical collaborations and improvisations. This first session was recorded at the very start of Norway’s coronavirus lockdown in March 2020, and brings together 5 musicians in an improvised session recorded from different places around Bergen Kjøtt.
