“The passion for destruction is a creative passion”, so wrote the Russian revolutionary anarchist Mikhail Bakunin.
Taking Bakunin’s statement as a point of departure, human geographer and cultural heritage researcher Laima Nomeikaite joins us to discuss the cultural phenomenon of name writing in public space (tagging).
What does tagging reveal about the human condition when considered within the wider context of visual art, aesthetics, architecture, urbanism, sociology, anthropology and citizenship; and how can empathy play a role in our understanding of this subcultural activity?
Laima Nomeikaite is a cultural researcher, physical improviser and currently PhD candidate in cultural studies at Roskilde University in Denmark and University of South-Eastern Norway. In recent years she has worked on a variety of projects related to culture and heritage research, including the research project ‘Street art, heritage and urban space’ at the Norwegian Institute for cultural heritage research (NIKU).
