We are delighted to have Alejandra Aguilar Caballero over for Radio Tenthaus, to talk about her recent Tenthaus P1 residency. During her residency in P1 – mobile studio in Lier in February 2022, she continued exploring time, identity, personal and collective memory, and narrative through a graphic approach involving the students at Gullaug Skole.
Alejandra works with the idea of “Containers of Time” a mechanism to preserve memories. The containers are paper houses: a series of two-dimensional reduction woodcuts that I cut, fold and arrange with additional prints and collages into three-dimensional graphic objects. Reproduction with color variation makes each container a unique transitional home, a place where my childhood stories can inhabit and develop.
These “Containers of Time” are a fundamental part of her graphic installation “You Set the Scene”, where she illuminates the houses from the inside and suspends them from the ceiling in a dark setting. The glowing paper houses create a dramatic and atmospheric experience that is completed with projections and soundscapes. The installation invites the viewers into places and events from my early life and upbringing in Mexico, opening at the same time a safe space to project their own stories.
Alejandra’s works are influenced by a strong drive to redefine the narratives that constitute our reality. She aims to generate fictions full of hope and empowerment that are at the same time so fantastic and other-worldly they seem out of reach, yet through their materiality, they become an intimate and magical presence.
