Throughout the curatorial process, we were very often inspired by artists, biennales, artworks and our colleagues. The idea of “How art came to you” was brought up by one of the curators, Helen. So we have been inviting artists or artist-run spaces to share their stories of the moment when art became significant in our lives.
“How art came to you” is a collection of stories shared by artists and artist-run spaces around the world. They shared the moments when art first knocked on their doors and left an indelible mark on their lives. From chance encounters to life-changing events, these personal narratives explore why art became such a vital part of their existence. These stories celebrate the transformative power of art and discover the genuine, unfiltered stories behind the art that’s touched their souls.
In today’s episode, we would like to share a story shared by Leeeunji, a member of Jungganjijeom.
You will probably be able to recognize where it was recorded, in a white cube exhibition space, office space, or outdoor with prayer in the background. I was very touched that they were all so willing to share their intimate moment with me, as well as acknowledge how far they have made it since the moment when they were touched by art an earlier age. I invite you to think about how art came to your life, after listening to these stories. I believe that this can be a good starting point to prepare yourself before visiting Momentum 12.
As the name Jungganjijeom suggests, we are interested in exploring liminal states in the realm of visual art. The liminal states here include the possible conversations around an artist, their work, and space and the borderline between genres in visual art. We aim to put together an exhibition that seeks “a meaning in process,” rather than showcasing already completed works. Jungganjijeom is a space for young artists to exhibit experiments that will eventually expand the meaning of their practice. Jungganjijeom now is running two spaces — Jungganjijeom I in Euljiro, Seoul since 2018 and Jungganjijeom II in Seochon, Seoul since 2022. Jungganjijeom is also an artist-run collective that practices ways of expanding diverse subjects in collectivity into exhibition experience.
Radio Momentum is a platform open to artists participating in MOMENTUM 12. It provides a bridge to a wider program of exhibitions, sound works, research, workshops, audio tours, interviews, discussions, and events.
